Photographing Chef Brett Graham’s Masterpieces on William Edwards’ Fine Bone China

Every so often you get a phone call, a booking that makes you go whoa! When I received that call from William Edwards England to ask if I’d be interested in photographing the 3 Michelin star restaurant, The Ledbury in Notting Hill I wasn’t going to say no.

The brief was to photograph chef Brett Graham in the kitchen of the restaurant and to capture some of his dishes, made especially for us, on William Edwards’ fine bone china tableware.

William Edwards and I got the train to London where we met who was very hospitable. We discussed how we thought the photography should be approached and made a start. The images in the kitchen were to be taken ‘fly on the wall’ style as frankly, it was just so hectic. The food shots were taken in the dining room using a mixture of natural and studio lighting.

The biggest challenge was to capture the food faithfully AND to show the very delicate pattern on the edge of the plates and bowls. The fine bone china service had been a design collaboration between William and Brett, not something I wanted to get wrong!

The next day, back at the studio in Stoke-on-Trent we went through the images and chose what we thought would be best for the brochure.

My work takes me to many places & this was up there with one of the best.
